FAQ’S for nannies

As a nanny, you may be engaged either as an employee or an independent contractor. While both options are available, we suggest and encourage taking a professional employee arrangement to ensure better stability and benefits.

Nannies are covered under the Miscellaneous Award. This award outlines your rights and entitlements as an employee, so it’s important to be aware of how it applies to your role. Please note that we do not provide you advice surrounding this award.

If you are hired as an employee, your employer will provide you with a tax declaration form, and they are required to withhold the correct amount of tax from your wages. You should receive regular pay advice records, as well as PAYG payment summaries at the end of the financial year.

It is advisable to have a written agreement in place that outlines your working conditions, such as your duties, hours, and pay rate. This agreement helps protect both you and your employer and ensures clarity around your employment terms.

Depending on what type of employment you are engaged in superannuation is 11.5% on top of your wage if you work 30 or more hours per week. Learn more about superannuation obligations on the ATO website.

If you’re required to drive the family car, you will need to ensure that you’re covered under their car insurance policy.

If you use your own vehicle for work purposes, you’re entitled to be reimbursed either be a fuel allowance or KM’s. The current rate set by Fair Work is 88 cents per kilometre driven for work-related tasks.
